Cash & Currency Exchange in China: ATM & Forex Guide for Travelers

Updated: 2026-08-17 · By China Local Help Team · Money Payment

While China is rapidly becoming a cashless society, having some RMB (人民币) in cash is still useful — especially when you first arrive. This guide covers how to withdraw cash, exchange currency, and practical tips for handling money.

Withdrawing Cash from ATMs

At the airport or any port of entry, you'll find ATMs that accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.). Look for the corresponding logos on the ATM. Most major Chinese banks' ATMs accept foreign cards:

💡 Tip: ATMs at airports may charge higher fees. Bank branches in urban areas often have better rates and lower fees.

Currency Exchange

You can exchange foreign currency for RMB at several locations:

Exchange Rates

The official exchange rate is set by the People's Bank of China. Banks and exchange counters offer rates close to the official rate, but may include a small commission. Airport exchange counters tend to have less favorable rates than banks.

Exchanging Leftover RMB

Before leaving China, you can exchange your remaining RMB back to foreign currency at exchange counters in airports and major banks. Keep your exchange receipts — you may need them.

Practical Tips

💡 Important: While cash is still accepted by law, some small vendors may not have change for large notes. Mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat Pay) is far more common.
