China Car Rental Insurance: What You Need to Buy (and What to Skip)

·11 min read

Quick Answer

Always buy the full coverage (不计免赔 / zero deductible) — it costs ¥60-120/day but saves you from ¥3,000-50,000+ liability. Credit card insurance from Western banks does NOT cover China rentals.

Types of Car Rental Insurance in China

1. Mandatory Traffic Insurance (交强险)

Included in all rentals by law. Covers third-party injury/death and property damage up to ¥122,000 total (¥110k injury, ¥2k property). This is minimal coverage — you definitely need more.

2. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW / 车损险)

Covers damage to the rental car. Standard CDW has a deductible (免赔额) of ¥3,000-5,000. Cost: ¥40-80/day. If you scratch the car, you pay the deductible.

3. Supplemental Damage Waiver (不计免赔) — RECOMMENDED

Eliminates the CDW deductible. With this, you pay ¥0 for any covered damage. Cost: ¥60-120/day (often bundled with enhanced CDW). This is the most important upgrade.

[!LOCAL] 不计免赔 literally means 'no deductible waiver' — it waives your responsibility for the deductible. Always get this.

4. Third-Party Liability Upgrade (第三者责任险)

Increases coverage beyond the mandatory ¥122k. Options: ¥500k or ¥1,000,000. Cost: ¥20-40/day. Recommended if driving in expensive cities where you might hit a luxury car.

5. Personal Accident Insurance (座位险)

Covers medical expenses for driver and passengers. ¥50,000-100,000 per seat. Cost: ¥15-30/day per person. Check if your travel insurance already covers this.

6. Glass/Tire/Undercarriage Coverage

Standard CDW often excludes these. If driving on rough roads (Tibet, rural areas), add this coverage. Cost: ¥20-40/day.

7. Theft Protection (盗抢险)

Covers vehicle theft. Usually included in comprehensive packages. Verify it's included — standalone costs ¥30-50/day.

What Insurance Does NOT Cover (9 Exclusions)

    1. Driving without valid permit (no Temporary Driving Permit)
    1. Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs
    1. Using vehicle for commercial purposes (ride-hailing, delivery)
    1. Off-road driving or racing
    1. Damage from natural disasters (flood, earthquake) — unless specified
    1. Lost keys or lockout situations
    1. Tire punctures (unless you bought tire coverage)
    1. Undercarriage damage (unless you bought that coverage)
    1. Returning car late (extra charges apply)

Why Western Credit Card Insurance Doesn't Work

Most premium credit cards (Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum) offer rental car insurance. However, these typically exclude China for several reasons:

  • China requires specific local insurance products
  • Credit card coverage often excludes 'government-required' insurance
  • Many cards exclude certain countries entirely — China is often on that list
  • Even if covered, you must decline ALL local insurance first — rental companies won't let you

Don't rely on your credit card. Buy the local full coverage.

How to File a Claim (8 Steps)

  • Step 1: Ensure everyone's safety, move to safe location
  • Step 2: Call police (110) — required for any insurance claim
  • Step 3: Call rental company's emergency line immediately
  • Step 4: Take photos of damage, scene, other vehicle's plates
  • Step 5: Exchange information with other party (name, phone, insurance)
  • Step 6: Get police accident report (事故认定书)
  • Step 7: Return car to rental office with all documents
  • Step 8: Submit claim with police report, photos, rental agreement

Insurance Recommendations by Trip Type

  • City driving only: Full coverage (不计免赔) + third-party upgrade
  • Highway road trip: Full coverage + third-party upgrade
  • Rural/mountain roads: Full coverage + glass/tire/undercarriage
  • Long-term rental (1 month+): Negotiate package discount
