Chinese Apps Foreigners Need in China

China's digital ecosystem is unique. Many apps that travelers rely on elsewhere (Google Maps, WhatsApp, Uber) don't work or have limited functionality in China. Here are the apps you actually need.

WeChat is essential. It's not just a messaging app; it's the primary way to pay, communicate with businesses, access mini programs, and more. Set up WeChat Pay before you arrive if possible.

Alipay is the other major payment app. Both WeChat Pay and Alipay now accept international credit cards for payments, though setup can be tricky. Having both gives you maximum flexibility.

For navigation, Apple Maps works in China (using local data), but Google Maps is unreliable due to offset issues. Baidu Maps and Gaode (Amap) are the local standards, but both are in Chinese only.

For transportation, DiDi is China's ride-hailing app (the local equivalent of Uber). It has an English version. For trains, use 12306 or Trip.com. For food, Meituan and Ele.me are the main options.
