First-Time China Travel Checklist

Before You Book Your Flight

China is not like other destinations. Many Western apps don't work, cash is rarely accepted, and you need to set up several things before arrival to avoid serious problems.

The Essential Setup List

  • Download Alipay and complete identity verification (takes 1-3 days)
  • Download WeChat and register an account
  • Get an eSIM or international roaming plan
  • Install a working VPN and test it before departure
  • Download offline maps (Apple Maps or Maps.me)
  • Book a hotel that accepts foreign guests
  • Print your hotel confirmations in Chinese
  • Notify your bank about travel to China

Payment Setup (Most Important)

China is nearly cashless. You MUST set up mobile payment before arrival. Alipay is the easiest for foreigners — it accepts international credit cards and doesn't require a Chinese bank account.

LOCAL TIP: Set up Alipay at least 1 week before your trip. Identity verification can take 1-3 business days.

Internet & Apps

Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and most Western apps are blocked in China. You need a VPN to access them. Install and test your VPN before arrival — many VPN websites are also blocked.

  • VPN: Install before departure (recommended: NordVPN, ExpressVPN)
  • Maps: Apple Maps works; Google Maps does not
  • Ride-hailing: Download Didi (China's Uber) — has English interface
  • Food delivery: Meituan or Ele.me (both Chinese only)
  • Translation: Baidu Translate or Google Translate offline mode

At the Airport

When you land, connect to airport WiFi (requires Chinese phone number for SMS verification). If you have an eSIM, activate it before leaving the airport.

For transportation, use Didi (ride-hailing) or take the official taxi queue. Avoid people offering 'taxi services' in the arrivals hall — these are unlicensed and overcharge.

Common First-Time Mistakes

  • Not setting up payment before arrival (you won't be able to buy anything)
  • Assuming credit cards work everywhere (they don't)
  • Not having a VPN (you'll lose access to email, messaging, social media)
  • Booking hotels that don't accept foreigners (you'll be turned away)
  • Not downloading offline maps (navigation will be impossible)
