Mobile Payment in China 2026: Alipay & WeChat Pay Setup Guide for Foreigners

Updated: 2026-08-17 · By China Local Help Team · Money Payment

China is the world's most cashless society. From luxury malls to street food stalls, almost every transaction happens through a QR code scan. The two dominant platforms are Alipay and WeChat Pay. Setting them up before your trip will save you enormous hassle.

Why Mobile Payment Matters in China

In China, cash is increasingly rare. Many small shops, restaurants, and even some taxis don't accept cash at all. You'll need at least one of these apps to pay for daily expenses. The good news is that both now accept international bank cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.), making it easy for visitors to get started.

Alipay Setup Guide

  1. Download the app โ€” Get Alipay from the App Store or Google Play, or from alipay.com.
  2. Register โ€” Open the app and sign up using your mobile phone number. Both domestic and international numbers are supported.
  3. Link your bank card โ€” Go to Me > Bank Cards > Add Bank Card. Alipay supports Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover cards.
  4. Start paying โ€” There are two ways to pay:
    • Scan to pay: Tap "Scan" and scan the merchant's QR code
    • Show QR code: Tap "Pay/Collect" to display your payment code for the merchant to scan

WeChat Pay Setup Guide

  1. Download WeChat โ€” Available on all app stores. WeChat is China's super-app โ€” you'll use it for messaging, payments, and much more.
  2. Register โ€” Sign up with your mobile number.
  3. Link your bank card โ€” Go to Me > Services > Wallet > Bank Cards > Add a card. WeChat Pay supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, and Discover.
  4. Start paying โ€” Tap "Scan" to scan a merchant's QR code, or tap "Money" to show your payment code.

The Travel Pass is a prepaid card you can apply for and top up on the UnionPay app. It's designed for visitors and works for both online and offline payments.

Overseas E-wallets

If you already use certain overseas e-wallets, you may be able to use them directly in China without downloading anything new. Supported wallets include those from Hong Kong, Macau, and various Southeast Asian countries. Check the Alipay or WeChat Pay websites for the full list.
