⚠️ During the Canton Fair (mid-April to early May, mid-October to early November), hotels near Pazhou are fully booked and prices surge 2–3x. Book accommodation well in advance.
- Guangzhou Metro is extensive and efficient — 16 lines covering the entire city. Fares start at ¥2. Get a Yang Cheng Tong card or use Alipay/WeChat QR codes.
- Didi is widely available and affordable. Use via WeChat or Alipay mini-programs.
- Taxis are metered (starting at ¥12). Have your destination written in Chinese. Guangzhou taxi drivers generally speak limited English.
- The Canton Fair Complex (Pazhou) is served by Metro Line 8 (Xingang Dong or Pazhou stations). Free shuttle buses also run from major hotels during the fair.
- Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is about 28 km north of the city center; Metro Line 3 connects it directly.
Guangzhou (广州) is one of China's most dynamic cities — a subtropical megacity of 18 million people that has served as a major trading port for over 2,000 years. As the capital of Guangdong Province and the heart of the Pearl River Delta, Guangzhou is China's commercial gateway and the undisputed center of Cantonese culture, cuisine, and business.
The city's crown jewel event is the Canton Fair (中国进出口商品交易会), the largest trade fair in the world. Held twice yearly (April–May and October–November), it attracts over 200,000 international buyers from 200+ countries who come to source everything from electronics and textiles to machinery and consumer goods. The fair spans three phases across the massive China Import and Export Fair Complex in Pazhou, with over 70,000 booths displaying the latest products from Chinese manufacturers.
Beyond business, Guangzhou is a cultural treasure. The ancient Chen Clan Ancestral Hall showcases exquisite Lingnan architecture and folk art. Shamian Island, a sandbank in the Pearl River, preserves colonial-era European buildings from the 19th-century concession period. The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees and its Flower Pagoda date back over 1,000 years. And the towering Canton Tower, at 604 meters, offers one of the most dramatic observation decks in the world.
But Guangzhou's true soul is its food. As the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine — arguably China's most internationally influential regional cooking style — the city's dim sum (yum cha) culture is legendary. Morning tea houses like Dian Dou De (点都德), Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居), and Guangzhou Restaurant (广州酒家) serve up har gow, siu mai, cheung fun, and hundreds of other delicacies that have shaped how the world thinks about Chinese food.
2–3 days is ideal. 2 days covers the Canton Fair area and city highlights. Add a 3rd day for Shamian Island, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and a proper yum cha experience. If visiting during the Canton Fair (April or October), plan for at least 3 full days.
