Guilin Travel Guide

Guilin (桂林) has graced Chinese ink paintings for over a thousand years — and for good reason. The karst landscape of northeastern Guangxi Province is among the most extraordinary on Earth: thousands of limestone peaks rise dramatically from flat river valleys, their forms reflected in the winding Li River and its tributaries. The Chinese saying "桂林山水甲天下" (Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven) is not hyperbole — it's a verdict delivered by millions of visitors over centuries. The Li River (漓江) cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (阳朔) is the classic experience: an 83-km journey past a panorama of karst towers, water buffalo grazing on riverbanks, cormorant fishermen on bamboo rafts, and villages seemingly untouched by time. The view from the deck — misty peaks reflected in emerald water — is one of China's defining images. Yangshuo itself has become a traveler favorite: a small town surrounded by the most dramatic karst scenery, ideal for cycling through rice paddies, bamboo rafting on the Yulong River, and watching the sunset behind the Moon Hill. The countryside around Yangshuo is best explored by bike or electric scooter — every turn reveals another postcard-perfect view. For a different perspective, the Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) — the "Dragon's Backbone" — climb steep mountainsides in intricate patterns. Filled with water from May to June, they mirror the sky; golden in autumn harvest season; and starkly beautiful in winter.
