Public Transit in China: Bus & Subway Guide
Navigate buses, subways, and metro systems across China.
China's public transportation system is extensive, affordable, and efficient. All Chinese cities have bus networks, and 55+ cities have subway (metro) systems. Here's how to navigate them as a foreigner.
Getting a Transit Card
You have two main options:
Option 1: Physical Transit Card
Visit any subway station, bus terminal, or designated bank outlet with your ID. Key details:
• A deposit is usually required (typically ¥10–¥20, refundable)
• Minimum top-up amounts apply (usually ¥10–¥50)
• Cards can be topped up at any subway station or via mobile apps
• Payment methods: cash, WeChat Pay, Alipay
Option 2: QR Code (Recommended for Visitors)
No physical card needed!
- Alipay: Open Alipay → Tap "Transport" → Select your city → Activate the transit QR code
- WeChat: Search for the "Transit QR Code" (乘车码) mini-program → Select your city → Activate
Using the Subway
• Signs are typically bilingual (Chinese + English) in major cities
- Ticket gates accept transit cards or QR codes — simply tap or scan
• Fares are distance-based, usually ¥2–¥10 per trip
• Security checks are required at every station
• Peak hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM) can be extremely crowded
Using the Bus
• Most buses accept transit cards and QR codes
• Some routes still require exact change in cash
• Route maps and stop announcements are usually in Chinese and English
• Use Baidu Maps or Amap (高德地图) for route planning
Useful Apps for Navigation
- Baidu Maps (百度地图) — Most comprehensive mapping app in China
- Amap (高德地图) — Another excellent option
- Apple Maps — Works in China with English interface
Practical Tips
- 💡 Tip: The QR code method is available in most major cities. Just make sure you've set up Alipay or WeChat Pay first!
