Cash, Cards & Payments in China
·7 min read
Quick Answer
China is nearly cashless. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival. Cash is accepted in some places but inconvenient. Credit cards work at major hotels and malls only.
Payment Methods Ranked
-
- Alipay/WeChat Pay: Works everywhere, essential
-
- Cash: Accepted but vendors may not have change
-
- Credit cards: Only at international hotels, malls, high-end restaurants
-
- Debit cards: Can withdraw RMB from ATMs
Why Cash is Problematic
While legally required to accept cash, many small vendors, taxi drivers, and street food stalls prefer mobile payment. They often don't have change for large bills (¥100).
ATM Withdrawals
You can withdraw RMB from ATMs using international debit cards. Bank of China, ICBC, and Construction Bank ATMs usually work. Expect 2-3% fees plus your home bank's foreign transaction fee.
LOCAL TIP: Always have some cash as backup, but rely on Alipay for daily spending. Carry small bills (¥10, ¥20) if you use cash.
