WeChat Pay for Foreigners: Complete Setup Guide
Quick Answer
WeChat Pay is now available to foreigners. You need a WeChat account first, then enable WeChat Pay and verify your identity with your passport. International cards are accepted.
Why You Might Need WeChat Pay
While Alipay is easier for foreigners to set up, some smaller vendors, local markets, and certain services only accept WeChat Pay. Having both gives you maximum flexibility.
Step 1: Create a WeChat Account
Download WeChat from your app store. Register with your phone number. Note: WeChat sometimes requires an existing user to verify your registration. If this happens, ask a friend who uses WeChat to help.
Step 2: Enable WeChat Pay
Go to Me > Services > Wallet. If you don't see Wallet, you may need to update WeChat or your account may need additional verification.
Step 3: Real-Name Verification
Tap Wallet > Payment Management > Real-name Verification. Upload your passport photo and fill in your details.
Step 4: Add International Card
In Wallet, tap Bank Cards > Add a Card. Enter your Visa, Mastercard, or other international card details.
LOCAL TIP: WeChat's verification process can be stricter than Alipay. If you have trouble, try Alipay first as your primary payment method.
Using WeChat Pay
The process is identical to Alipay: open WeChat, tap the '+' icon or 'Money', and scan or show your QR code.
