Hotels & Foreign Guests in China
Quick Answer
Not all Chinese hotels can accept foreigners. Look for hotels licensed for foreign guests. International chains (Marriott, Hilton, etc.) always accept foreigners. Many budget hotels cannot.
Why Some Hotels Can't Accept Foreigners
Chinese law requires hotels to register foreign guests with local police. Not all hotels have the license or system to do this. Budget hotels, small guesthouses, and some Airbnb-style rentals may not accept foreigners.
How to Identify Foreigner-Friendly Hotels
- International chains: Always accept foreigners
- 4-5 star Chinese hotels: Usually accept foreigners
- Budget hotels: Often cannot accept foreigners
- Hostels: Some can, some can't — ask before booking
Registration Requirements
When checking in, you must show your passport. The hotel will copy your passport info and visa/entry stamp. They register you with local police within 24 hours.
LOCAL TIP: If a hotel says they 'cannot accept foreigners', don't argue — it's a legal restriction. Find another hotel.
Booking Tips
- Use Trip.com (international version of Ctrip) — shows foreigner-friendly hotels
- Booking.com works but verify the hotel accepts foreigners
- When in doubt, email the hotel before booking
