Xi'an City Wall Tickets 2026: Booking, Prices & Cycling Guide
Quick Answer
Xi'an City Wall no longer sells tickets on-site — you must reserve online in advance through the official "Xi'an City Wall Scenic Area" (西安城墙景区) WeChat official account or mini program. Adult tickets cost ¥54; half-price tickets are ¥27 for ages 6–18 and full-time students. Book 1–2 days ahead during holidays and peak season, as same-day tickets often sell out.

🎟️ Ticket Booking: Step by Step
The single most important thing to know: there are no walk-up ticket windows at the Xi'an City Wall. Real-name reservation is mandatory, and the only official channel is the scenic area's own WeChat account.
Where to book
Search for the WeChat official account or mini program named "西安城墙景区" (Xi'an City Wall Scenic Area). From the menu, choose the ticket-booking entry, select your visit date, pick the ticket type, and fill in the visitor's passport information.
When to book
- Ordinary days: Book the day before, or even the same morning if slots remain.
- Weekends, holidays, and peak season (April–October): Reserve 1–2 days in advance. Same-day slots are frequently gone by mid-morning.
- Free-entry visitors: Still need to make an online reservation — no reservation means no entry, even if you qualify for free admission.
Ticket prices
| Ticket type | Price | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥54 | Ages 18–64 |
| Half-price | ¥27 | Ages 6–18 (under-18 minors); full-time undergraduate students and below with valid student ID |
| Free | ¥0 | Children aged 6 and under or under 1.2 m; seniors aged 65 and above; active-duty military; disabled visitors (with valid documentation) |
[!NOTE] Free-entry visitors must also reserve online. Bring the same ID/passport you used for the reservation, plus any eligibility document (student card, military ID, disability certificate, etc.).
Monthly Citizen Open Day (15th)
On the 15th of every month, the Xi'an City Wall holds a Citizen Open Day (市民开放日) when Xi'an local residents can book free entry. This benefit is restricted to Xi'an residents only — out-of-town and international visitors are not eligible and will not be able to reserve that free ticket type.
🚶♂️ Entering the Wall: Which Gate?
Yongning Gate (永宁门), the South Gate, is the best choice for almost all visitors.
- Metro Line 2 stops directly at Yongningmen Station — take Exit A or B and you'll see the gate.
- It is the most scenic and best-maintained section of the wall.
- Facilities (toilets, bike rental, water, shops) are the most complete here.
- It is the only gate open for night visits until 22:00 — the lit-up wall at night is spectacular.
Other major gates — Anding Gate (West), Anyuan Gate (North), Changle Gate (East), and Jianguo Gate — generally stop admitting visitors at 20:00. Plan accordingly if you intend to enter or exit from one of them.
🚲 How to Explore: Walk or Cycle?
The wall is 13.74 km around — walking the full loop takes 3.5–4 hours and is hard on the feet because the brick surface is unforgiving. Renting a bike is strongly recommended.
Bike rental on the wall
| Type | Price | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Single bicycle | ¥45 | 3 hours |
| Tandem bicycle (2 people) | ¥90 | 3 hours |
| Deposit | ~¥100–200 (refundable on return) | — |
Rental stations are at the major gates, with Yongning Gate having the largest fleet. Bikes can usually be returned at any major gate (confirm at the rental counter when you pick up).
Recommended cycling route
Start at Yongning Gate (South Gate) and ride clockwise:
- Yongning Gate (South) →
- Anyuan Gate area via the east side →
- Changle Gate (East) →
- Anding Gate (West) via the north side →
- Back to Yongning Gate
The full loop at a relaxed pace, with photo stops, takes about 1.5–2 hours. Going clockwise keeps you on the inside lane, which feels slightly calmer than the counter-clockwise direction at busy times.
✨ Practical Tips
Best time to go
Arrive around 17:00. You'll get three experiences in one visit:
- The wall in daylight, with clear views over the grey-tiled rooftops of the old city.
- Sunset over the city — the golden hour here is genuinely beautiful.
- The wall lit up after dark, especially around Yongning Gate.
In summer, push arrival to ~18:00 to avoid the midday heat (the wall has almost no shade). In winter, aim for 15:30–16:00 to catch the earlier sunset.
What to wear
- Comfortable flat shoes are non-negotiable. The Ming-dynasty brick surface is hard and uneven; heels or thin-soled fashion shoes will make you miserable within 30 minutes. Sneakers or light hiking shoes are ideal.
- Sunscreen, a hat, and water in summer; a windproof layer in spring and autumn (it gets breezy on top).
Gate closing times
| Gate | Last entry / closing |
|---|---|
| Yongning Gate (South) & Jianguo Gate | 22:00 |
| Anding Gate (West), Anyuan Gate (North), Changle Gate (East) | 20:00 (last entry earlier) |
If you're cycling the full loop, start early enough to get back to a gate before it closes — staff do clear the wall in the evening.
Combo ticket with the Stele Forest Museum
If you also plan to visit the Stele Forest Museum (碑林博物馆), just inside Wenchang Gate on the east side, ask about the City Wall + Stele Forest combo ticket, priced at around ¥100. It is meaningfully cheaper than buying the two tickets separately (¥54 + ¥65 = ¥119 at standard prices) and lets you visit both on the same trip or within the validity window.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Showing up without a reservation expecting to buy a ticket at the gate. There is no on-site box office. You will be turned away.
- ❌ Booking only on the morning of a public holiday. Tickets for Labor Day (May 1), National Day (Oct 1–7), and Spring Festival routinely sell out 1–3 days ahead.
- ❌ Trying to enter from a west/north/east gate after 20:00. They're closed; only the South Gate and Jianguo Gate stay open until 22:00.
- ❌ Attempting the full loop on foot in the middle of a summer day. It is long, exposed, and physically tough — cycle instead.
- ❌ Forgetting your passport. Entry is real-name; the ID used for booking must match the document you present at the gate.
