How to Get from Chengdu to Bipenggou by Public Transport (2026)

·8 min read

Quick Answer

Bipenggou has no train station — you must go by road. The most convenient public transport option is a direct scenic shuttle bus from Chunxi Road (春熙路) in central Chengdu, departing at 07:00/07:30 for ¥80 per person and arriving at the park entrance in about 3.5–4 hours. The cheapest option is a long-distance bus from Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站) to Lixian (理县) for around ¥60–100, followed by a shared minibus or taxi to the scenic area (¥15–20, ~20 minutes). Total one-way travel time is roughly 3.5–5 hours depending on the option.

FactorBest Option
EasiestDirect shuttle from Chunxi Road (¥80, 3.5–4 hrs, no transfer)
CheapestChadianzi → Lixian bus + local transfer (~¥75–120, 4–5 hrs)

Best ForHikers, nature lovers, autumn foliage, summer escape

Bipenggou (毕棚沟) is a glacial valley in Li County (理县), Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, about 200–220 km northwest of Chengdu. Known as the "Little Switzerland of Western Sichuan," it features snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, red stone beaches, and primeval forest. The valley sits at 2,000–3,800 m elevation, so altitude awareness is essential. There is no high-speed rail connection to Lixian — all public transport is by bus.

Option 1 — Direct Scenic Shuttle from Chunxi Road (Recommended)

Step-by-step

  1. Book your seat in advance. The "天府行" (Tianfu Xing) direct shuttle departs daily from Miry Plaza (米瑞广场) near Chunxi Road Metro Station. Seats must be booked at least one day ahead through the Tianfu Xing WeChat mini-program or via Trip.com (search "Chengdu Bipenggou shuttle").

    • Departure times: 07:00 and 07:30 daily
    • Fare: ¥80 per person one way
    • Duration: Approximately 3.5–4 hours, depending on traffic
    • Drop-off: Bipenggou Scenic Area parking lot, right at the visitor center entrance

[!TIP] Trip.com also lists round-trip shuttle options with regular, "nanny bus" (wider seats), and business vehicle categories. Return buses depart Bipenggou at around 15:00–17:00. If booking a round trip, confirm the return pickup point — some services drop off back at Chengdu East Station rather than Chunxi Road.

  2. Arrive at the meeting point by 06:45. Buses leave promptly. The Chunxi Road area is accessible via Chengdu Metro Lines 2 and 3 (Chunxi Road station). Allow extra time if you are staying elsewhere in the city.

  3. Enjoy the ride. The route follows the Rongchang Expressway (G4217) through Wenchuan and then National Highway G317 into the mountains. There is usually a rest stop around the halfway point.

  4. Arrive at Bipenggou Visitor Center. The bus drops you at the main entrance parking lot. Head to the ticket office to collect or purchase your tickets, then board the mandatory scenic sightseeing bus into the valley.

Option 2 — Chadianzi Bus to Lixian + Local Transfer (Cheapest)

Step-by-step

  1. Get to Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站). This is Chengdu's main long-distance bus hub for western and northwestern Sichuan. It is accessible via Chengdu Metro Line 2 (Chadianzi Bus Terminal station).

  2. Buy a ticket to Lixian (理县). Buses run throughout the day:

    • Departure times: Approximately 07:40, 08:10, 09:00, 10:30, 13:30, and 15:30 (sourced from the official Bipenggou scenic area WeChat account; schedules may change by season)
    • Fare: Around ¥60–100 per person (reports vary by season and bus type; some sources cite ¥31 for older buses, while current listings show ¥60–100)
    • Duration: Approximately 3 hours to Lixian Bus Station (理县客运中心)
    • Buy tickets at the station or through the Chadianzi Bus Station WeChat account / Ctrip bus section.

[!IMPORTANT] There is no consistent direct bus from Chadianzi all the way to Bipenggou's entrance. Some travelers report occasional direct services (around ¥230 one way, 4–5 hours), but these are unreliable and may not run daily. The standard public transport route is always Chengdu → Lixian → Bipenggou.

  3. Transfer at Lixian to Bipenggou. From Lixian Bus Station:

    • Shared minibus / carpool (拼车): Minivans and shared taxis wait outside the bus station and depart when full. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs roughly ¥15–20 per person. This is the most common local transfer.
    • Taxi: A private taxi from Lixian to the Bipenggou entrance costs around ¥50–80 for the whole car.
    • The distance from Lixian town to the scenic area visitor center is about 20 km.
  4. Arrive at Bipenggou Visitor Center. Buy or collect your tickets and board the scenic sightseeing bus.

Total cost and time

  • One-way cost: Approximately ¥75–120 (¥60–100 bus + ¥15–20 transfer)
  • One-way time: Approximately 4–5 hours including the transfer and waiting time

Option 3 — Direct Bus from Xinnanmen

Xinnanmen Bus Station (新南门车站) in central Chengdu also operates direct buses to Bipenggou during peak season:

  • Departure times: Around 07:00 and 07:30
  • Fare: ¥98–128 per person (varies by vehicle type; one source lists ¥98 for standard and ¥128 for SUV/business class)
  • Duration: Approximately 4 hours
  • Distance: About 190–192 km

This option is comparable in convenience to the Chunxi Road shuttle but may have less frequent service. Verify current schedules at the station or on chinabusguide.com before traveling. In low season, these direct services may be suspended.

Inside the Scenic Area

Bipenggou uses a mandatory shuttle system — you cannot walk the 26 km mountain road from the entrance to the core area.

Both electric cart segmentsFull round trip¥60Best value; covers 9 km total

[!TIP] Recommended route: Take the sightseeing bus all the way to Shanghaizi (do not get off at Longwanghai on the way up — the return bus does not always stop there). Then take both electric cart segments up to Swallow Rock Nest (the highest viewpoint), and hike/walk back down through Panyang Lake, Moon Bay, Zhuoma Beach, and Red Stone Beach. This saves energy and avoids backtracking.

Tickets and opening hours

  • Admission: ¥70 per adult (regular season); promotional rate of ¥30 from April–June and winter months; the sightseeing bus is a separate mandatory purchase (¥60 regular / ¥70 winter)
  • Opening hours: 08:00–17:30 during peak season (April 1 – November 27), with last entry at 15:00; 08:30–17:30 in off-season
  • Booking: Tickets must be purchased in advance through the official "毕棚沟景区" WeChat mini-program or via OTA platforms (Meituan, Ctrip, Tongcheng). Real-name registration is required; bring your passport.
  • Time needed: 5–7 hours inside the park for a thorough visit

How to Get Back

  • By direct shuttle: If you booked a round-trip shuttle, the return bus typically departs from the Bipenggou parking lot at around 15:00–17:00. Confirm the exact time and pickup point with your driver in the morning.
  • By public bus: From Bipenggou, take a shared minibus back to Lixian Bus Station (¥15–20, ~20 min). Buses from Lixian back to Chengdu Chadianzi run until mid-to-late afternoon — aim to be back at Lixian station by 15:00–16:00 to ensure a seat. Buy your return bus ticket in Lixian as early as possible, as afternoon buses can fill up on weekends and holidays.
  • If you miss the last bus: A private taxi or carpool from Lixian back to Chengdu costs significantly more (several hundred yuan for the whole car). Your best fallback is to stay overnight in Lixian or at Guergou (古尔沟) hot springs and return the next morning.

[!WARNING] This is a long day trip. The first bus from Chengdu departs around 07:00, and the last return connection from Lixian is in the late afternoon. If you want more time in the park — especially for photography in autumn — consider staying one night in Lixian, Putou, or Guergou.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Waiting for a train that does not exist. Lixian has no high-speed rail station and no passenger train service. Do not waste time searching 12306 for "Bipenggou" or "Lixian" — the only public transport option is the bus. (A future railway is planned but not yet operational.)

  2. Assuming Chadianzi buses go all the way to the park entrance. Most public buses terminate at Lixian Bus Station, 20 km from Bipenggou. Budget extra time and money for the Lixian-to-park transfer.

  3. Arriving too late. Last entry to the scenic area is at 15:00, and the internal sightseeing bus takes 40 minutes just to reach Shanghaizi. If you take the 09:00 or later bus from Chengdu, you may not have enough time to see the core highlights. Take the earliest possible departure.

  4. Skipping the mandatory sightseeing bus. The 26 km road from the visitor center to Shanghaizi is not walkable. The ¥60–70 bus fee is not optional — it must be purchased with your ticket.

  5. Underestimating altitude. The trailhead is at ~2,000 m, and Swallow Rock Nest reaches ~3,800 m. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness. Walk slowly, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol the night before, and consider bringing altitude medication (consult your doctor). If you feel a severe headache or dizziness, descend immediately.

  6. Not booking tickets in advance. Bipenggou uses real-name timed entry with daily caps during peak season (especially October for autumn foliage and winter for snow). Book through the official WeChat account at least one day ahead. On-site ticket windows only handle special ID cases and can involve long queues.

  7. Ignoring weather conditions. Afternoon rain and fog are common from July to August, and winter roads may require snow chains. Check the weather forecast and the official Bipenggou WeChat account for road conditions before departing.

Before You Go

  • Admission: ¥70 (regular) / ¥30 (shoulder/winter promotion) + mandatory sightseeing bus ¥60–70
  • Opening hours: 08:00–17:30 (peak season, last entry 15:00); 08:30–17:30 (off-season)
  • Recommended visit duration: 5–7 hours; 2 days/1 night is more relaxed
  • Best time to visit: Mid-October to early November for autumn colors; December–March for snow; June–August for cool summer escape
  • What to bring: Layers (temperatures drop sharply at altitude), rain jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, snacks, water, and altitude-sickness remedies
  • Phone signal: Can be patchy in the deeper valley; download offline maps and tickets before entering
  • There is currently no Crowd Forecast for Bipenggou on China Local Help.
