Quick Answer

Take a high-speed train from Hangzhou East to Deqing Station (~15–20 min, ¥16–25 second class), then the Y1 tourist bus to the Moganshan Tourist Transfer Center (~30–40 min, ¥2), and transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus up the mountain. Total travel time is about 1.5 hours each way.

Moganshan (莫干山) is a mountain resort in Deqing County, Huzhou, about 60 km from Hangzhou. It is famous for its bamboo forests, cool summer temperatures (5–8°C lower than Hangzhou), Republic of China-era villas, and the trendy Yucun (庾村) cultural market at the mountain base. It is one of the most popular weekend escapes from both Hangzhou and Shanghai.

[!IMPORTANT] The nearest high-speed railway station is Deqing Station (德清站), about 20 km from the Moganshan scenic area. There is also Deqing West Station (德清西站) for regular trains, but Deqing Station is the one most travelers will use.

Option 1 — High-Speed Train + Y1 Bus + Scenic Shuttle (Recommended)

Step-by-step

  1. Get to Hangzhou East Railway Station (杭州东站). Take Hangzhou Metro Line 1, 4, 6, or 19 to Hangzhou East. Some trains also depart from Hangzhou Station (杭州站).

  2. Buy a train ticket to Deqing Station (德清站). G-trains take about 15–20 minutes and cost approximately ¥16–25 for second class. D-trains take about 23 minutes. Trains run every few hours (not as frequently as the Shanghai–Hangzhou corridor) — check the schedule in advance. Bring your passport.

[!NOTE] Make sure your ticket says Deqing (德清), not Deqing West (德清西). Deqing Station is the high-speed rail station with the Y1 bus connection.

  3. Arrive at Deqing Station. Exit the station and turn right toward the bus center. Look for Bus Y1 (Y1路旅游专线), the tourist shuttle to Moganshan.

  4. Take Bus Y1 to the Moganshan Tourist Transfer Center (莫干山旅游换乘中心) / Yucun (庾村).

    • Duration: approximately 30–40 minutes
    • Fare: ¥2
    • Note: Y1 runs on a limited schedule. Check the posted timetable at the station. If the wait is long or Y1 is not running, take a taxi instead.
  5. Transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus (景区接驳车) at the Moganshan Tourist Transfer Center. This shuttle takes you up the mountain to the core scenic area:

    • Private cars are generally not allowed to drive up to the scenic area during peak season (08:00–17:30), so the shuttle is required unless you have a booking at a mountain hotel.
    • The shuttle runs frequently and stops at major points including Yinshan Street (荫山街), the main hub on the mountain.
    • A combo ticket including the scenic area entrance and shuttle is available for about ¥150; the entrance alone is about ¥80–85.
  6. Explore Moganshan. The main attractions include Jianchi (剑池, the Sword Pool with waterfalls), Luhuadang Park (芦花荡公园), Wuling Village (武陵村) with its historic villas, and the bamboo forest trails.

Train details (Hangzhou → Deqing)

DetailInformation

ArrivalDeqing (德清)
G-train duration15–20 min
D-train duration~23 min
Second class (G-train)~¥16–25
FrequencyEvery few hours; check schedule in advance
Distance~40–50 km

[!TIP] If Y1 is not running or the wait is long, take a taxi or DiDi from Deqing Station to Yucun/Transfer Center. It costs about ¥30–60 and takes 20–30 minutes. For 2–3 people, this is faster and only slightly more expensive than the bus. Do not take unlicensed taxis at the station — use DiDi or the official taxi rank.

Option 2 — K588 Bus from Hangzhou North

If you are staying near north Hangzhou or prefer a direct bus:

  1. Go to Hangzhou North Bus Station (杭州汽车北站) on Moganshan Road (莫干山路766号).
  2. Take Bus K588 to Wukang (武康), also known as Deqing town center.
    • Duration: about 1 hour
    • Fare: ¥12 (exact change recommended)
    • Frequency: approximately every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 19:30
  3. From Wukang, take a taxi or minibus to Moganshan scenic area (about ¥80–100, 20–30 minutes).

This option is cheaper but involves more uncertainty with the final transfer. The train is generally more reliable.

Option 3 — Train + Taxi (Fastest)

For maximum convenience:

  1. Take the G-train from Hangzhou East to Deqing (15–20 min, ¥16–25).
  2. Take a taxi or DiDi from Deqing Station directly to the Moganshan Tourist Transfer Center or Yucun (20–30 min, ¥30–60).
  3. Transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus up the mountain.

Total time: about 50 minutes to 1 hour; total cost: approximately ¥70–110 per person including the scenic shuttle.

[!WARNING] Do not take unlicensed taxis or "black cars" (黑车) at Deqing Station. They may overcharge. Use DiDi or the official taxi rank. If going directly to a hotel on the mountain, ask the hotel to arrange a pickup — the cost is usually similar to a taxi but the driver will know the way.

How to Get Back

  1. Take the scenic area shuttle down to the Moganshan Tourist Transfer Center/Yucun. The last shuttle down the mountain is typically around 16:00–17:00 (verify locally; if you miss it, you may need to wait or take a taxi).
  2. From the Transfer Center, take Bus Y1 back to Deqing Station (check the schedule) or a taxi (¥30–60, 20–30 min).
  3. Take a high-speed train from Deqing back to Hangzhou East. Trains run until approximately 21:00–22:00, but frequency is limited in the evening. Check the return schedule in advance and book early.

[!IMPORTANT] The last sightseeing bus up the mountain is around 16:00. If you plan to hike on the mountain, start early and keep an eye on the time. Schedules may change — verify locally at the transfer center or with your hotel.

If you miss the last transport

  • A taxi or DiDi from Moganshan back to Hangzhou costs about ¥150–250 depending on your destination.
  • Moganshan has a wide range of accommodations — from luxury resorts (Naked Retreats, etc.) to budget farmhouses. An overnight stay is highly recommended, especially in summer when the mountain is cool and the bamboo forest is atmospheric at dawn and dusk.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Going to Deqing West instead of Deqing Station. Deqing Station (德清站) is the high-speed rail station with the Y1 tourist bus. Deqing West (德清西站) serves only regular K-trains and is less convenient for tourists. Check your ticket carefully.

  2. Expecting frequent trains. Unlike the Shanghai–Hangzhou corridor, trains from Hangzhou to Deqing run every few hours, not every few minutes. Check the schedule before you go and book your ticket in advance, especially on weekends.

  3. Missing the last scenic shuttle up the mountain. The last shuttle bus from the transfer center to the mountain top is around 16:00. If you arrive late, you may not be able to enter the core scenic area. Start early.

  4. Trying to drive up the mountain in peak season. During peak season (summer, weekends, holidays), private cars are not allowed up the mountain road. You must park at the transfer center and take the shuttle. If you have a hotel booking on the mountain, show your reservation to access the road.

  5. Taking unlicensed taxis at Deqing Station. Use DiDi or the official taxi rank. Unlicensed drivers may charge 2–3 times the normal fare.

  6. Underestimating the mountain terrain. Moganshan involves uphill walking, stone steps, and forest trails. Wear proper walking shoes, bring water, and a light jacket — the mountain is 5–8°C cooler than Hangzhou, especially in the evening.

  7. Only visiting the scenic area and skipping Yucun. Yucun (庾村) at the mountain base has a charming Republic of China-era old street, a cultural market, cafes, and the old train station. It is worth spending 30–60 minutes there before or after your mountain visit.

Tickets & Reservations

  • The Bamboo Sea Rafting (竹海漂流) and other activities in the broader Moganshan area may have separate tickets.
