Which stations to use

Shanghai has three major railway stations. Choose based on where you are staying:

Shanghai StationChineseBest For
Shanghai Station上海站Central Shanghai (Jing'an, Zhabei); some G-trains to Suzhou Station
Shanghai Hongqiao上海虹桥站Most frequent G-trains; connects to Hongqiao Airport; Metro Lines 2/10/17
Shanghai South上海南站Fewer trains to Suzhou; mostly southern routes

In Suzhou, choose your arrival station based on your plans:

Suzhou StationChineseBest For
Suzhou Station苏州站⭐ Closest to the old town, gardens, and canals (Humble Administrator's Garden, Pingjiang Road)
Suzhou North苏州北站High-speed G-trains only; farther from the old town (~20 min taxi)
Suzhou Industrial Park苏州园区站Near Jinji Lake and the modern business district

[!TIP] For sightseeing, book a train to Suzhou Station (苏州站), not Suzhou North. Suzhou Station is within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove Garden, and Pingjiang Road. Suzhou North is about 15 km north of the old town and requires a 20–30 minute metro or taxi ride.

Step-by-step

  1. Get to your departure station. For Shanghai Hongqiao, take Metro Line 2 or Line 10 to Hongqiao Railway Station. For Shanghai Station, take Metro Line 1, 3, or 4.

  2. Buy your ticket. Book through Trip.com (English interface, international cards accepted), the 12306 app, or at station ticket machines/windows. Bring your passport — it is required for both booking and boarding.

  3. Board the train. G-trains (G字头) are the fastest at 300 km/h; D-trains (D字头) run at 200–250 km/h. Both are comfortable and reliable.

  4. Arrive at Suzhou Station. The old town is directly across the river from the station. The Humble Administrator's Garden is about 2 km away — a 10-minute taxi ride (¥12–15) or a 25-minute walk. Pingjiang Road is about 1.5 km away.

From Suzhou Station to the gardens

DestinationFrom Suzhou Station
Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园)10 min taxi (~¥12) or bus

Pingjiang Road (平江路)20 min walk or 5 min taxi
Tiger Hill (虎丘)15 min taxi (~¥20)
Shantang Street (山塘街)10 min taxi or metro

Option 2 — D-Train or Regular Train (Cheapest)

If you want to save a little money, D-trains cost about ¥22.5–37 for a second-class seat and take 30–48 minutes — only marginally slower than some G-trains. Regular K/T-trains cost ¥12.5–18.5 for a hard seat but take 1–1.5 hours and have far fewer departures.

For most travelers, the G or D train is well worth the small premium. The regular train only makes sense if every high-speed train is sold out.

Option 3 — Metro Line 11 (Budget / Curiosity)

Shanghai Metro Line 11 extends across the border to Huaqiao (花桥), where you can transfer to Suzhou Metro Line 11. This takes about 2.5–3 hours and costs roughly ¥20, but it is slow and requires multiple transfers. Only consider this if you are a metro enthusiast or every train is sold out during a major holiday.

How to Get Back

  • Return trains from Suzhou Station to Shanghai run until approximately 22:00–22:30, with frequent departures throughout the evening.
  • If you are staying in Suzhou for dinner and the night views of Pingjiang Road or Shantang Street, aim to catch a train back by 21:00 for a comfortable margin.
  • If you miss the last train: Hotels in Suzhou are plentiful and reasonably priced (¥200–400 for a mid-range room). A taxi or DiDi back to Shanghai costs ¥250–400 depending on your destination.
  • Tickets can sell out on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons as commuters and weekend travelers return to Shanghai. Book your return ticket in advance.

[!IMPORTANT] Schedules may change — verify locally. Check return train times on 12306 or Trip.com when you arrive in Suzhou.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Going to the wrong Suzhou station. Suzhou Station (苏州站) is next to the old town and gardens. Suzhou North (苏州北站) is 15 km away. Always check which station your ticket says before booking.

  2. Going to the wrong Shanghai station. Shanghai has three major stations — Shanghai Station, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Shanghai South. They are not close to each other. Double-check your departure station and allow extra time to get there.

  3. Forgetting your passport. You need your original passport to collect tickets and board the train. A photocopy or photo is not sufficient.

  4. Arriving too late. High-speed trains close the boarding gates 3–5 minutes before departure. Arrive at the station at least 20–30 minutes before your train, especially at Hongqiao which is very large.

  5. Not booking ahead on holidays. Trains to Suzhou sell out quickly during Chinese public holidays (especially Qingming, Labor Day, and National Day). Book 3–7 days in advance.

  6. Taking the bus instead of the train. Buses take 1.5–2.5 hours and are subject to highway traffic. With trains taking 25–40 minutes and running every few minutes, there is little reason to take the bus.

Tickets & Reservations

  • Suzhou's major gardens (Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove Garden) require advance booking, especially during peak season. Book through the official garden WeChat mini-programs or Trip.com.
  • The Humble Administrator's Garden has a daily visitor cap; book at least 1–2 days ahead during spring and autumn.
