1. Get to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (张家界西站). This is the high-speed rail hub, about 8.5 km from the city center. Take city bus 4, 6, 16, or 17, or a taxi (¥20–30, 20 min from downtown). From Wulingyuan, take the tourist bus to West Station (¥13, 50 min) or a taxi (¥80–120, 40–60 min).

2. Buy your ticket to Fenghuang Gucheng Station (凤凰古城站). Trains run on the Zhangjiajie–Jishou–Huaihua high-speed line:

3. Arrive at Fenghuang Gucheng Railway Station. The station is about 10–11.5 km from the old town — not within walking distance. This is the most common oversight for first-time visitors.

4. Take the shuttle bus into town. After exiting the station, follow signs for the "Inter-city Shuttle Bus" (城际接驳车) to the bus/ticket area:

   • Fare: ¥7 per person
   • Duration: about 20 minutes (up to 30–60 min in heavy traffic)
   • Frequency: every 10–30 minutes, running approximately 07:00–22:00
   • Routes: The shuttle goes to two destinations — Qifeng Square (奇峰广场) tourist center (for middle/lower river area) and Nanhuali (南华里) tourist center (for upper river area). Ask your hotel which stop is closer.
   • From either stop, it is a 2–4 minute walk into the ancient town.

5. Walk to your hotel or explore. Cars are not allowed inside the old town. If your hotel is deep inside, you may need to walk 10–20 minutes on cobblestone streets. Many hotels offer electric cart pickup from the shuttle stop — ask when booking.

[!IMPORTANT] The shuttle bus runs until about 22:00. If you arrive on a late train, a taxi is your best option. DiDi may have limited availability in the old town area.

Option 2: High-Speed Train + Maglev Train

The Fenghuang Maglev Sightseeing Express (凤凰磁浮观光快线) is a tourist-oriented maglev line connecting the high-speed railway station with the ancient town scenic area:

• The Lansheng Station (揽胜站) is the closest to the old town, with a viewing platform ("Phoenix Eye") overlooking the Tuo River and stilt houses. From there, walk about 5 minutes down a boardwalk and elevator into the ancient town.
• The maglev is a fun experience with panoramic views, science exhibits, and cultural displays — but it is primarily a tourist attraction, not the fastest transfer.
• After getting off, you still need to walk about 1 km to reach the core of the old town.

[!TIP] Take the maglev if you want the scenic experience and have time. Take the ¥7 shuttle bus if you want the fastest, cheapest, and most direct transfer.

Option 3: Taxi or DiDi

• A taxi from Fenghuang Gucheng Station to the old town costs approximately ¥25–30 and takes 10–20 minutes.
• This is the best option if you arrive late, have heavy luggage, or are staying at a hotel far from the shuttle stops.
• Note: DiDi and ride-hailing services can be unreliable in Fenghuang — drivers may not accept orders in the old town area. Have your hotel arrange a pickup if possible.

How to Get Back

• Return trains from Fenghuang Gucheng to Zhangjiajie West run about 16 times daily, from approximately 11:29 to 21:22. The journey takes 52 minutes to 1 hour 7 minutes, and second-class fares are ¥65–93.
• To get to the railway station from the old town, take the shuttle bus from Nanhuali Bus Stop (南华里) or Qifeng Square, or take a taxi (¥25–30, 15–20 min).
• The shuttle bus and maglev both stop running in the early evening. If you have a late train, take a taxi.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Assuming Fenghuang Gucheng Station is in the old town. It is 10 km away. Budget an extra 20 minutes and ¥7–30 for the transfer. This is the single most common mistake.

2. Taking the maglev and expecting it to drop you in the town center. The maglev is a sightseeing line. The closest station (Lansheng) still requires a 5-minute walk down to the town, and the core area is another 10–15 minutes on foot. For direct access, use the shuttle bus.

3. Arriving late without a transfer plan. The shuttle runs until ~22:00 and the maglev until ~21:30. If your train arrives after that, only taxis are available. DiDi may not work well in Fenghuang — ask your hotel to arrange pickup.

4. Rolling heavy luggage through cobblestone streets. The old town has uneven stone paths, narrow alleys, and stairs. Wheeled suitcases are difficult. Pack light or arrange hotel pickup with an electric cart.

5. Booking a train that stops at every station. Some trains take 1 hour 11 minutes; others take 51 minutes. Check the duration when booking. G-series trains are generally fastest.

6. Not booking train tickets in advance during holidays. The Zhangjiajie–Fenghuang route is very popular during Chinese New Year, National Day (Oct 1–7), and summer vacation. Book 15 days ahead on 12306 or Trip.com.

7. Trying to use DiDi within the old town. No cars are allowed inside the ancient town. Even if you book a DiDi, it can only drop you at the edge. Walk or use an electric cart from there.

Before You Go

• Entrance fee: Entering the old town itself is free. A combined ticket (¥135) covers nine interior attractions (former residences, temples, etc.) and a night boat cruise. You can explore the streets, riverbank, and bridges without buying a ticket.
• Best time to visit: March–November for pleasant weather. The old town is magical at night when lanterns reflect on the Tuo River. Avoid Chinese national holidays when crowds are extreme.
• What to bring: Passport (for train tickets), comfortable walking shoes (cobblestones), cash (small vendors), a light rain jacket, and a camera for the night views.
• Recommended visit duration: 1 full day and 1 night for the essential experience; 2 days for a slower pace and nearby villages.
• Night boat cruise: Operates 19:30–23:30; buy tickets at Nanhuali or Qifeng Square tourist centers or through your hotel.
