Option 1: Bus from Central Bus Station (From Zhangjiajie City)

Step-by-step

Go to Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (张家界中心汽车站). It is next to Zhangjiajie Railway Station on Guanniping Street. City buses 4, 8, 17, and 102 stop nearby. The station is about 800 m north of the Tianmen Mountain Cableway lower station.
Buy a ticket for the Grand Canyon (大峡谷) bus. The fare is ¥22 per person. Buses depart every 40 minutes from approximately 07:00 to 17:30. The journey takes about 1 hour 20 minutes (55 km).
Arrive at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (张家界大峡谷游客中心). The bus drops you at the visitor center parking lot. From there:
- A free shuttle bus (included with your scenic area ticket) takes you up to the Glass Bridge entrance — about 15 minutes.
- Have your passport and ticket booking confirmation ready for real-name verification at the bridge entry.
After crossing the bridge, follow the canyon trail down through waterfalls and caves. The full route (Route B) ends with a boat ride across Shenquan Lake to the exit. Total visit time is 3–4 hours.

[!TIP] Arrive at the bus station by 07:00–07:30 to catch the first bus. The Glass Bridge opens at 08:00, and arriving early means you can cross before the tour groups arrive (by 10:00–11:00, the bridge is at its busiest).

Buses from the Grand Canyon back to Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station run until approximately 17:00–17:30. Confirm the last departure at the visitor center when you arrive.
If you miss the last bus, a taxi or DiDi back to the city costs about ¥150–170.

Option 2: Bus from Wulingyuan (If Staying Near the Park)

If you are based in Wulingyuan (the most common base for visiting the national park), the Grand Canyon is much closer:

Go to Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站).
Take the direct bus to the Grand Canyon: ¥12, about 30 minutes, every 40 minutes from 07:20 to 15:30.

Option 3: From Zhangjiajie West Railway Station

If you arrive by high-speed train at Zhangjiajie West Station:

Walk to the Tourist Distribution Center on the western side of the station.
Take the direct coach to the Grand Canyon: ¥26, about 1 hour, approximately every hour from 07:00 to 16:50.
This is the most convenient option if you are heading straight to the Grand Canyon from an arriving train.

Option 4: Taxi or DiDi

From Zhangjiajie city: ¥150–170, about 1 hour
From Wulingyuan: ¥55–70, 35–45 minutes
From West Station: ¥100–150 depending on traffic

DiDi works well in Zhangjiajie and shows the fare upfront. This is the best option if you are traveling in a group, have a tight schedule, or are visiting after bus hours. Agree on a fixed price before getting into a street taxi.

How to Get Back

To Zhangjiajie city: Last tourist bus around 17:00–17:30 from the Grand Canyon. Taxi/DiDi after that (~¥150–170).
To Wulingyuan: Last bus from Wulingyuan departs at 15:30 going out; return buses run through the afternoon. Confirm the schedule at Wulingyuan Bus Station in the morning.
If you finish the canyon by the boat exit (Shenquan Lake), you will exit at Guxia Parking Lot (谷峡停车场), where return buses and taxis are available.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not booking the Glass Bridge ticket in advance. The bridge has a daily visitor cap and sells out, especially on weekends and holidays. Book 3–5 days ahead in summer. Your passport must match the ticket name for entry.
Going to the wrong meeting point. Buses depart from Central Bus Station, Wulingyuan Bus Station, and West Station — three different places. Choose the one closest to where you are staying.
Wearing inappropriate shoes. High heels are not allowed on the Glass Bridge. The canyon trails are also wet and slippery — wear trail runners or hiking shoes with grip. Sandals are a poor choice.
Arriving too late. The full Route B (bridge → canyon → boat) takes 3–4 hours. If you arrive after 13:00, you may not have time to complete the route before the scenic area closes. Aim for the first bus.
Forgetting that the route is one-way. Once you descend into the canyon from the bridge, you exit by boat at a different point (Guxia Parking Lot). You cannot go back to the visitor center on foot. Plan your return transport from the exit, not the entrance.
Not bringing water and food. There is only one small stall in the canyon (at Rainbow Plaza), and it is expensive. The full walk is 3 km. Bring your own water and snacks.
