Chengdu (成都) is China's most laid-back major city — a place where the pace of life slows to a tea-sipping, mahogany-table shuffle, and where the food is so good that UNESCO designated it Asia's first City of Gastronomy. With 16 million residents and a climate that's mild but often overcast, Chengdu feels like a different side of China compared to the breakneck energy of Beijing or Shanghai. The city's biggest draw is the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Breeding (大熊猫繁育研究基地), where you can see giant pandas up close in a naturalistic setting. The early morning feeding time (7:30–10:00 AM) is when pandas are most active — by midday they're usually sleeping in a heap. Red pandas also roam the grounds. Beyond pandas, Chengdu is the gateway to Sichuan cuisine — arguably the most influential regional food tradition in China. The signature mala (麻辣) flavor — numbing Sichuan peppercorn combined with fiery chili — defines everything from bubbling hotpot to street-side mapo tofu. The city's food scene ranges from Michelin-recognized restaurants to hole-in-the-wall spots serving the best bowl of dandan noodles you've ever had. Chengdu also serves as the jumping-off point for two extraordinary day trips: Dujiangyan, the 2,200-year-old irrigation system that's still functioning today, and the Leshan Giant Buddha, a 71-meter-tal statue carved into a cliff face over 1,300 years ago. The city's teahouse culture — especially in People's Park — offers a window into genuine local life.
