Tianmen Mountain Zhangjiajie: Heaven's Gate Complete Guide

Updated: 2026-08-18 · By China Local Help Team · Zhangjiajie

Tianmen Mountain (天门山, "Heaven's Gate Mountain") is one of Zhangjiajie's most iconic attractions. Rising 1,518 meters above the city, it's famous for its massive natural arch (Heaven's Gate Cave), the world's longest high-altitude cable car, and a vertigo-inducing glass skywalk.

Key Highlights

1. The Cable Car

At 7,455 meters long, this is the longest passenger cable car in the world. The 30-minute ride ascends from the city center directly to the mountain summit, offering breathtaking views of Zhangjiajie's urban landscape transitioning into dramatic karst peaks.

2. Heaven's Gate Cave (天门洞)

A massive natural arch — 57 meters high, 30 meters wide — formed by erosion through the mountain. It looks like a giant gateway to heaven. You can climb the 999 steps to reach it, or take the escalator (extra fee).

3. Cliff-Hanging Walkways

A network of wooden and glass walkways is bolted to the sheer cliff face at the summit. The glass section (¥5 shoe cover rental) offers terrifying views straight down. The wooden paths wind through misty peaks and ancient trees.

4. 99 Bends Road (通天大道)

The mountain road has exactly 99 hairpin turns, symbolizing the "99 bends to heaven." You can see it from the cable car — it's one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world.

Routes

There are two main route options:

Both routes cover the same attractions in different order. Route A is more popular because the cable car ascent is more dramatic.

Best Time to Visit

April–October offers the best conditions. Early morning right after opening (8:00 AM) is best for clear skies and fewer crowds. Cloud sea views are most common after rain when the sun comes out.

💡 Tip: Check the weather before going. If it's foggy or raining heavily, visibility at the summit may be near zero. A clear day after rain is magical — you'll be walking above the clouds.
